The story

This section tells the history of the world of Anno 2070

The scenario is set in the year 2070. Global warming has melted the Arctic ice cap, which has raised the global sea level so that the coasts were inundated.[4] As a result, many old cities have vanished under the ocean, and much of what was once highland has been turned into chains of new islands. Responsibility for settling and exploiting these new frontiers is given to a select group of people, who captain mobile ocean-going bases known as Arks. The game has three factions: The Eden Initiative (referred to as the "Ecos"), Global Trust (referred to as the "Tycoons"), and the S.A.A.T. (referred to as the "Techs"). Ecos are environmental and build sustainable cities, but are inefficient and slow to expand. Tycoons are industrious and expand quickly, but have problems with pollution and dwindling resources. The Tech is a support faction available to the other two, and they are useful in researching the latest and most powerful technologies. The Techs are only available later in the game when you donate 10,000 credits to their cause.

The Anno series is the empress of economic strategies. While other brands of this type were losing their popularity year by year, this series grew stronger with each subsequent release. Even the change of the developer did not hurt the series (from the 1701 edition it is Related Designs studio). On the contrary - the new team added breathtaking visuals and further refined the mechanisms governing the virtual economy. Continuous improvement, however, led the authors to the wall. The Anno 1404 was so good that it didn't actually leave much of its sequel to improve, at least without a solid technological leap. The fans, however, did not intend to wait many years for the next part.

In this way, the authors faced a difficult task - to create a game that, on the one hand, would not be a reheated cutlet, but at the same time would not abandon everything for which we loved the entire series. The answer to this problem was a flight into the future, namely until 2070.

The world we are moving into is not like this one. Man-made climate change has caused sea levels to rise rapidly. Many areas have been completely flooded, and others have become so saturated with salt water that nothing can be grown on them. The state structures and international institutions were unable to survive this cataclysm. However, not all is lost. Due to the current conditions on Earth, there is no more room for multi-million people in agglomerations. Instead, humanity has to start living in small, self-sustaining communities. Aware of this, a group of scientists associated in the SAAT organization creates Arks - huge submarines that are bases from which you can colonize new lands. We play the role of the captain of one of them.

The basic gameplay mechanisms have not changed drastically compared to previous editions. The fun again consists in establishing small colonies on the islands. We erect residential buildings to attract workers, build industrial structures, extract raw materials and then process them into final products. We must keep our community happy all the time. Satisfying the needs of the population enables them to advance to the next rungs of the development ladder, and gives us higher taxes and access to new buildings and technologies. All this does not mean, however, that moving the action to 2070 was only used to cover the game with a new layer of paint. Futuristic atmosphere allowed the authors to let their imagination run wild, which they meticulously used by introducing a lot of fresh elements.

The first of them are the already mentioned Arki. Their spacious interiors can hold a lot of raw materials and goods, making them not only perfect storage but also shopping centers. We can also use their communication systems to order supplies of needed goods. It is not cheap, but in an emergency it can save our skin. Arks also act as a kind of player avatar. As the game progresses, we expand them from mission to mission and equip them with new modules.

Another novelty is the introduction of three factions, each of which has its own buildings and technologies. The first is the powerful Global Trust corporation. It focuses on dynamic development and pure profit. He strives to achieve his goal over the dead and does not care about the good of the environment. The second faction is the Eden Initiative. This group is agreeing to slower economic growth and paying high taxes in order to be able to care for mother nature. The third and last organization is the aforementioned SAAT. Its members mainly deal with research and development of new technologies. The division into factions is very different from what players are used to in military RTS games. In Anno 2070, we most often have access to the buildings and solutions of each group, and it is only up to us what we choose. The main choice here is made between the Global Trust and the Eden Initiative through the introduction of the ecology system. Wasteful exploitation of raw materials causes environmental pollution, which in turn has a negative impact on the efficiency of all crops. The authors, however, provided us with enormous freedom of action. Nothing prevents you from building the structures of both factions on one island, although you have to bear in mind that the settlers of the Eden Initiative react negatively to contaminated nature. At the same time, we can always eliminate the damage done, although it is not cheap. In contrast, SAAT provides access to new technologies and complements the two main groups. In addition, it has a monopoly on underwater development. At the same time, each of these organizations requires the creation of its own mini-economy for it. Members of individual factions have different needs and requirements, and meeting them all is not easy. The islands are large, but we run out of space fairly quickly, so placing the structures of all three groups on them in a way that they do not interfere with each other is a real challenge and ensures that we always have something to do.

Another novelty is the possibility of exploiting the bottom of the seas, which is helped by submarines that can be ordered on the Ark. This aspect of the game has been greatly simplified. It is impossible to build entire underwater cities and instead we are limited to small mining facilities. Nevertheless, the opportunity to play underwater is a lot of fun and is another of many elements that make Anno 2070 the richest installment in the series.

Of course, the world of the future is powered by electricity. Global Trust focuses on coal-fired power plants, while Eden Initative, preferring renewable sources, chooses windmills and hydropower plants. Electricity is quickly becoming a key element in managing any island. All buildings need it for full functionality. If we do not take care of it, production will slow down and the military structures will cease to function altogether. Thus, in the case of Anno 2070, maintaining the appropriate power levels in the black is almost as important as ensuring a continuous flow of cash. Futuristic realities also allowed for the introduction of new resources, items and vehicles. We can, among others build uranium mines and use genetically modified seeds, and fill the sky with flying units, including both civilian machines, such as ozone regenerators, and fighters. The latter make combat more interesting, ensuring that invasions no longer only start at the shores of the islands. Of course, this is still Anna , so the military aspect is of tertiary importance, and victory depends mainly on a well-managed economy. An interesting addition are large TV screens - erected in cities, they spread propaganda and influence the behavior of residents.

The game offers several fun modes. The campaign consists of eleven long missions. They play the role of an extensive tutorial, which familiarizes us with all the gameplay mechanics step by step. That doesn't mean it's boring. On the contrary. The first two challenges are very easy, but then the stairs quickly begin. Futuristic atmosphere allowed the authors to significantly diversify the offered tasks. Of course, this is an economic strategy, so most often we are required to produce a specific good or deliver items to a specific place. Putting it all up in new clothes, however, had an excellent effect. Actions such as searching the seabed for the wreckage of an early Ark prototype, extinguishing fires on oil rigs and cleaning up oil spills, or trying to uncover the plans of an aggressive AI, are ultimately much more interesting than delivering spices. Unfortunately, the campaign scenario does not surprise with its originality and does not fully use the potential of this world. The proposed vision of 2070 is very interesting and it is a pity that the authors did not allow us to learn more about it. Even access to text-based newsletters would significantly enhance the storyline of the game. Despite these minor complaints, the story is absorbing and the campaign as a whole turns out to be very successful, which is rare in this genre.

Of course, sooner or later we complete all missions, which gives us the knowledge and skills needed to play in continuous mode, which is basically the heart and soul of this type of game. We choose the starting conditions and start building our own communities, without any time limits or victory guidelines, although also in this mode there are interesting side quests. The creators of Anno 2070 did not forget about the multiplayer. We can have fun in both the competitive and cooperative mode, and an additional attraction are the very rich configuration options for rules governing online games. In addition, a procedure known from modern FPS was skillfully applied. The obtained improvements to the Ark are carried over from match to match, which provides a very rewarding sense of continuity. Social options are also a great addition. From time to time, all three factions use the legislative initiative and the players themselves vote which proposal will be accepted, which introduces modifications to the economic rules. We also regularly add new quests to complete, and if we accept them, they will appear in our normal play later. In addition, the game offers a ridiculously large list of Achievements.
