Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - game review
When the end credits appear in my eyes after less than six hours of playing with the shooting, I am disappointed. However, as far as the Call of Duty franchise is concerned, I don't mind. Why? From the beginning of this series, I have been delighted with the ease with which Infinity Ward creates compelling interactive videos that have the word "non-linear" where the back loses its noble name. In the case of the fourth episode of the popular series, which I want to tell you more about now, the Americans maintained an extremely high form. The queen of scripts is back and, in short, she "swept", as long as we are able to accept the fact that this time around the game has nothing to do with World War II.
The authors decided to refresh the cycle and offered the fans a conflict set in modern times. Although I am not a supporter of this type of production and usually avoid them, I think that this change turned out to be good for the Call of Duty series. Recently, a lot of titles referring to World War II have appeared on the market, not only in the genre of first-person shooters, thanks to which this topic is becoming more and more threadbare. Instead of another episode about the struggle with the Nazis, we have a story about the exploits of American and British boys in the Middle East and the former republics of the Soviet Union. The idea may not be original, but at the moment it is definitely more inviting than the endless conquests in Normandy.
The reality has changed, but the rest is as old as it was. We start the struggle with training, during which we will learn how to use a machine gun and find out that bullets can penetrate some, less durable materials, e.g. wood or sheet metal (this information will be useful during the exchange of fire with enemies hiding behind obstacles). Then it's time for a short but substantial warm-up. Captain Price - well known from previous installments of the series - will send us to the obstacle course. The task is to clear the next locations from enemies, symbolized by harmless shields. Depending on how quickly we complete the training mission, the game will determine the difficulty level. We can follow this advice or not, but it's better to use a helping hand, because, contrary to appearances, the actual struggle is not the easiest one.
Already during the first real task - aboard an Estonian freighter during a storm - we will find out that despite climate change, we are still dealing with the good old Call of Duty series. The next missions are performed in groups of several people, and the killed allies are in most cases replaced by incoming reinforcements. Our comrades in arms actively participate in the struggle, eliminating enemies, throwing flash and smoke grenades, and finally ... opening passages to new locations. There is no revolution in this last point either - you will be able to move on as soon as the game allows you to do so. It is true that it does not bother you during the first approach to the program, but the situation changes dramatically when we try to complete the campaign for the second or third time. Then it turns out that in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare you can play practically with your eyes closed - just remember the location of enemies in each room and nothing will surprise us.
In the case of other shootings, such clear limitations, as a rule, doom the product to failure, but in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare they can be accepted without any problems. This is because the Script Queen compensates for the lack of freedom with the story she presents. And it is not about the plot, which from the very beginning clearly defines who is good and who is bad, thus leaving no room for any surprises, but about its presentation. All you will see and experience in the single-player campaign is a perfectly made movie - effective and engaging - in which you will become the most important actors. You will witness a real virtual war and perfectly arranged scenes with a group of tireless soldiers trying to face the overwhelming enemy forces. Spectacular explosions, whistling bullets in the air, helicopters and fighters flying overhead, companions dying in front of your eyes - in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare there is no time for boredom, something is happening all the time. I was so enchanted by what was on the screen that I didn't leave the computer until I finished the game. Of course, it's only five hours with the hook, but I don't remember the last time something similar happened to me. And this is an "ordinary" shooting ...
We owe the positive impressions of the game primarily to perfectly designed scenarios, creating a coherent campaign. Already in the above-mentioned mission on the ship, a lot is happening, and this is just the beginning. Actions of a small group of commandos under the cover of night, exchange of fire in the streets of Arab cities (reminiscent of scenes from the movie Helicopter on fire), air bombardment of enemies or a frontal attack on enemy installations - it is really hard to complain about the lack of impressions. The real masterpiece, however, is the mission near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which is not only a great spectacle with an overwhelming climate, but also an excellent example of how people from Infinity Ward can use scripts. A sniper visit to our eastern neighbors will be remembered for a long time and is undoubtedly one of the highlights of this program.
In addition to the standard campaign, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare features one more game mode - arcade. It allows you to face the prepared scenarios again, but this time on slightly different principles. The first difference is the existence of "live" - if we die, we can return to the fun as in the traditional campaign, but only a certain number of times. Therefore, the game requires more focus, because you have to be careful at every step so as not to get a random ball in the head. The second difference is that there are points that are awarded for the extermination of opponents. Successful annihilation triggers a multiplier, allowing you to score more points. During the struggle, you can also receive additional "lives", which will undoubtedly increase the chances of completing the game in this mode.
The new gameplay variant does not knock your knees down, but it is a nice addition that we can use if we want to re-complete the missions prepared by the authors. Its advantage is the fact that we can face single scenarios and the entire campaign at once - unfortunately, only after completing the game for the first time on any difficulty level.
A strong point of the Call of Duty series has been the multiplayer mode for years, and no doubt many fans will buy the fourth installment of the series only to fight on the Internet. The Infinity Ward company was well aware of this, so you can expect many attractions in the multiplayer. The most important change compared to the predecessors is the introduction of experience points, gained in the course of individual games for exterminating enemies (both direct frags and assists are scored) and completing tasks on the battlefield, e.g. planting explosives, defending the territory for a specified period, or also taking over the flag.
Just like in RPGs, in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, experience points allow you to get to the next levels. In the product of the Infinty Ward company, they open access to new weapons (a total of 22 basic guns plus 4 additional ones), challenges (bonuses for completing mini-tasks, e.g. killing a certain number of enemies with one rifle) and the so-called. perks. The latter are nothing but additional skills (e.g. better durability or greater projectile power) that we can give our soldier when creating a class. The individual perks differ significantly, which undoubtedly adds variety to the gameplay.
New products are also waiting for us not only on the menu, but also during the struggle. In an interesting way, the authors decided to reward those participants in multiplayer battles who kill several opponents in a row. The next three frags allow you to use the reconnaissance, showing the locations of enemies on the map. After eliminating six opponents, the player can bomb the indicated area from the air. The last bonus is summoning a helicopter that hovers over the map for some time, shooting at enemies.
As you can see, online struggles have made a big metamorphosis in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. If we add to all this 16 maps, 6 different modes of struggle and a very high gameplay resulting from the dynamic gameplay, it will turn out that the latest product from Infinity Ward has a lot to offer. And this is just the beginning - after all, the community focused around the game will do its bit. There will be no shortage of map makers and modifications.
This is how we reached the end of the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare story. At this point I could pay tribute to the creators for a nice visual setting and excellent sound, but what a horse is, everyone can see - just fire up the previously shared demo to see what awaits us after launching the full version of the game. And about the fact that it is very good, I do not have to convince.
I will not charm anyone by assuring everyone what a great product Infinity Ward gave us. The truth is: if you don't like the Call of Duty franchise, I doubt you'll love the short single-player mode, the ubiquitous scripting, and little freedom of action. If, on the other hand, you love everything I wrote above, you will be delighted, because Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the best interactive movie I have seen in my life.
In the case of multiplayer, things are a bit different. Anyone can reach for it, but nowadays the competition in this field is so big that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has a rather slim chance of attracting new players. Fans of the series will surely appreciate the changes made and will stay with the program for longer. In any case, there are many novelties, which will please all old stagers.
Final verdict? One of the best shooters of this year and undoubtedly the most interesting installment of the series - of course, I mean only those episodes that were released on "tin plates". It is a shame not to play Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, on the other hand, you should remember about everything I wrote above. One can only be wiped off the face of the earth when one loves this series with boundless and blind love. And so I love her.

PS. Watch the end credits to the end after completing the campaign. A nice surprise is waiting for you.
