As we have said, we are not going to walk with half measures in this text. The reality is that Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is one of the best classic platform games of recent years. It stands out, especially for its extraordinary level design , which allows both experts and newbies alike to have a challenge at the height of their ability. The newcomers will take it easy, and gradually discover the difficulty that the game involves in achieving all the optional objectives. Not to mention that what seems easy at first is complicated as we go through its 7 game worlds, until it is a challenge at the height of the best thumbs. Experts will stop seeing enemies as obstacles, turning them into tools to get the letters or the turn record in the time trial of each level. That is precisely why we say that the game is replayable, due to the different layers that we can taste as we become more skilled with Donkey and company.
Another asset of this Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is its extreme variety. No two levels are the same , and we will find situations and mechanics that are used on a single occasion throughout the adventure. This means that at all times we maintain the 'emotion' of the novelty, without needing to change the parameters of the adventure. To this we must also add the companions who will throw us a cable (and incidentally they will give us a couple of extra touches), which will allow us to jump higher, plan, roll at full speed without pause ... Without forgetting that also these Companions have some depth and allow maneuvers that will help us survive even better at each level.
However, all this that you read above we already said four years ago in the original analysis of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. All the strengths and weaknesses of the game have been traced, leaving the gameplay, graphics, sound and options as we received them at the time ... Which means missing the opportunity to refine the game's formula a little more. Not because it is not well controlled (rather the opposite), or because the graphics have aged (not even remotely), but because the launch of this game should be justified, beyond the fact of trying to reach an audience that he missed it at the time (and he will no longer be able to do so when the game disappears from the WIi U virtual store).
You could, for example, have added some phase. It has not been the case. It would also have been nice to tweak the system for two simultaneous players, which ended up being circumstantial in 2014, and it's also now in 2018. The only change comes from the inclusion of Funky Kong , to make everything a little easier. Funky has more life, the spikes do not hurt him, he jumps more and glides, he rolls infinitely ... We assume that this is so that the little ones in the house enjoy the adventure without any problem, but we believe that it was not necessary making the task so easy that it even becomes routine and graceless. Too bad this is the only 'innovation' in this rescue. However, this does not detract from the rest of the show, which remains one of the best, and most replayable, 2D platforms of the modern era .
The audiovisual bill remains excellent at all times, with impeccable artistic design and the extraordinary original soundtrack by David Wise , original composer of the Donkey Kong Country. The game in its Switch version works like a charm, with a constant 60 FPS, both in portable mode and connected to the dock (although the resolution varies from 720p to 1080p , respectively in each mode) and an outstanding definition. It improves somewhat on the original, but it could not be said that it takes a leap forward in terms of presentation. In any case, it is still an excellent game, which has withstood the test of time like few other titles ... And that is the proof that Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a real game.
