Endurance repulsiveness in the profundities of the Pacific Ocean, where no sunbeams enter: on the sea depths, stranded with minimal light and apparatuses, a mechanical jumper returns edgy strides to the surface before oxygen and psyche give way. At first began as an understudy venture, this endurance story unfurls from a first-individual point of view from inside a "walking coffin" - a complex jumping suit, reasonable for the remote ocean that gauges a large portion of a ton - after a genuine modern mishap happened. Impacted and roused by the expanding craving for flighty loathsomeness and games with articulated stories, Narcosis is tied down actually, yet from that point it moves deliberately into the surreal.Features: Deadly weight: Stressful circumstances quicken oxygen ingestion, mutilate the faculties, Time and space. Unfriendly waters: A blade, electric lamp and lights are basic to endure the nightmarish widely varied vegetation of the profundities of the ocean. Beguiling account: The survivor's story unfurls in an unexpected path during the player's venture. Neither great nor terrible : There are not a single questionable organizations or extraordinary powers in sight in the profound dark heart of Narcosis, just the exposed dread and the investigation of human limits. Experience new components of drenching in VR.About Honor Code: Based in France and California, Honor Code's abundance of experience comprises of titles, for example, Assassin's Creed, Dance Central, Metal Gear Solid, Remember Me, Republique, The Silent Age, and Silent Hill.

Narcosis - Analysis
When we see the Narcosis trailer we think that we are going to live a horror story. An "Alien Isolation under the sea". And in a way, there are feelings that can evoke it from us ... but clearly, the experience differs greatly from any Dead Space or horror game in which we feel isolated from humanity. Narcosis plays with the environment and the environment to make us feel a great helplessness; we are in constant danger. No one can help us. And the worst: oxygen is scarce . The penetrating darkness is also a dangerous enemy, and we really feel that we are in such a deep environment that not even sunlight comes through.
At the plot level, we are facing an adventure that tells us the experience of a specialist diver, member of a team whose base is in the deepest part of the ocean, totally isolated from the outside world. Some facilities protect them from the unsustainable oceanic tonnage, but nothing lasts forever ... As soon as we begin, and accompanied by a story that puts us in action, we witness how the entire exploration mission that is taking place goes to waste. They have the bad luck of being close to the epicenter of a beastly earthquake that devastates everything in its path, leaving us almost alone (there are some survivors out there, but you will have to discover that) and with very few resources to survive. It happens that an introspective style has been chosen that is somewhat reminiscent of The Turing Test .
The gameplay of the title is quite complex, although its learning is quite affordable. For starters, the game controls (first person) are more or less the same as in any shooter. In this case, the movements are muffled by the aquatic environment, as expected, which is accompanied by our suit being very heavy and orthopedic. We do have a driver that makes our lives more bearable at times when we overcome obstacles or when we need some speed. With the mouse we look in all directions, even inside the diving suit, where there are indicators of our oxygen level and some elements to guide us. We are armed with a knife , which can be of help to us on occasion, but in general our main combat resource is our mission, since it is time to dodge monsters, find routes ... and not get lost. Because if that happens, we may run out of oxygen .
Fortunately or unfortunately, this resource is not in short supply either. Drowning is often synonymous with that we have neglected and gone astray . Of course, the feeling of overwhelm and suffocation is constant even if we have more than half a bottle. Combat, as we have said before, is almost the last resort, and in fact sometimes it is absolutely useless if the submarine "bug" that we face is very large. In addition to this, we will see the experience dotted with moments when we can do nothing except watch how some scene tries to put on the bad body. We would lie to you if we said that the scenes of "terror" scare us, but they do contribute to making the atmosphere oppressive. Of course, it is an " aquatic nightmare " that will not last more than 4 hours . And it's a pity, because at all times we notice that the game is going to lead us to something great ... that doesn't come. And it is a pity that it does not reach the "peak" of interest that it needs.
Technically, Narcosis is a title full of light and shadow . Yes, light effects and that, but we don't mean that aspect; rather, that we are going to be amazed and disenchanted with what aspect. The characters, be they friend or foe, enjoy a graphic finish typical of a few years ago, while the environment, which plays powerfully with carefully drawn in the dark, is spectacular if we play with the necessary requirements to set it to high resolution . It is a privilege that a modest development game looks like this, making it almost a sort of underwater Doom.
In the sound section , we can say that the voices (in English) are well interpreted, and since we have texts in Spanish, there is no problem. The music goes a little more unnoticed, remaining in a discreet background, but supports the general atmosphere, which after all is characterized by recollection. Good work, although it is not the brightest of its sections.

Fabio "Kenobit" BortolottiNarcosis - Review
Narcosis is a textbook case on the difference between VR games and those on traditional screens. It is an atmospheric horror set at the bottom of the sea, with ...
Wearing HTC Vive (or Oculus Rift), everything changes. Those slow underwater movements become an advantage, because the extreme subjective of the viewers makes them more realistic and credible. Word of cacasotto: in some moments they made the experience TOO credible. The other detail, not least, is that the slow underwater movement satisfactorily solves the so-called "locomotion problem" of virtual reality. For those who are not following the world of VR, I can sum it up like this: how does movement work in virtual reality? How can we give the player control over the movement of his avatar without regurgitating the 2016 panettone?
Virtual reality is a great illusion for our brain, and the concept of "walking without walking" creates a short circuit which in many cases leads to nausea, or at least to an uncomfortable experience for the player. Many games solve the problem with short distance teleportation, but it is clear that such an artifice would ruin the idea of atmospheric horror at the base of Narcosis, which therefore adopts a more traditional control system, with a normal controller (or if you want with a keyboard). The aquatic movement does not break the illusion of VR, and has allowed me to play Narcosis in two sessions of a couple of hours each. If I hadn't been interrupted by real-world commitments, I think I could have shot myself the whole game in one hit (by being sponsored by Pampers).
With HTC Vive, the same atmospheric horror that on the traditional screen knew a little already seen is ... terrifying. It takes ten seconds to no longer notice the graphics, which by the way is perfectly in the average of the VR productions of recent times, and you get lost in a world of darkness, tension, claustrophobia. It is easy, in front of a screen, to step up and go to that dark corner, after hearing a disturbing sound. With headphones and visor, the flares to make light become a precious resource, more in psychological terms than in actual play. The pace becomes tight, because every meter is scary.
As in the best horror films, in Narcosis there is more fear when nothing happens than when something happens. Audio also does its part, with exceptional ambient sounds that make the use of headphones absolutely mandatory (like anything in VR, but in this case even more). The noise of the protagonist's breath is perfect. It conveys anxiety, relief, panic, proving to be a phenomenal narrative tool.
I don't want to spoil surprises on the plot, also because in fact we are dealing with a relatively short game, but you just need to know that after an earthquake the protagonist is lost in an underwater structure, and that the only chance to survive is to find a way to go back to the research lab. Too bad that the earthquake blew up the light and created all sorts of pitfalls. The game is divided into fourteen chapters, which orbit around the exploration and resolution of small puzzles (some more successful than others). Again, the secret is all in VR: the atmosphere and tension make these simple gameplay moments much more intense and interesting. Bonus points for texts and interface, very legible and comfortable, even after hours of play.
The rating you see below refers to Narcosis played in VR. Moreover, it is not a normal game that also supports VR, it is a VR game that can be played in the traditional way if desired. In any case, I am convinced that the future of horror and that of virtual reality go hand in hand. These are exciting times to be a gamer.
Sensation of motion sickness : low, despite the absence of teleport
Game speed : slow
VR effect : highMODUS OPERANDI
I played Narcosis with a code received from the developer. I played it all with HTC Vive, in about four hours, and then tried it faster in traditional mode. To hurt myself, I used excellent headphones that completely isolate from the outside world. Number of suspicious spots in underwear: 3 every 35 minutes. -
Jakub MirowskiNarcosis review - fight for survival with the ocean, fear and your own labyrinth
The review was based on the PC version. Also applies to PS4, XONE versions
The light in water bodies rarely reaches more than 200 meters. Below this level, the nightmare begins: squid that can attack an unlucky diver, and fish that would scare a xenomorph with its appearance. Diving even further, we enter unknown territory: humanity has only explored a few percent of the world's oceans. These are good reasons to be scared to death at the thought of exploring any body of water larger than the surrounding pool alone. Meanwhile, Narcosis tells us to go down to a depth of more than 3 kilometers, hide in a coverall affectionately called "walking coffin" and undertake a desperate fight for survival . The developers didn't even have to try - this horror was writing itself.
The debut project Honor Code puts us in the role of a deep sea diver who, after a catastrophic earthquake, has to find a way to get to the surface. This simple assumption works much better in practice than another story about greedy corporations or secret research facilities on the bottom of the ocean. Unfortunately, the developers themselves probably did not have that much faith in their vision: they apparently decided that the depths themselves are not scary enough and decided to spice it up with a solid dose of cliché visions to present the hero's struggle with his broken psyche. The choice did not pay off, because the scenes in which the protagonist's mind serves us strange delights have a much weaker effect than wandering alone in search of another oxygen bottle.
Despite the fact that scarecrows do not always work, it must be admitted that Narcosis grabs the player by the throat from the very beginning and does not let go even in moments when we are not threatened . This independent horror movie isn't particularly terrible: its power lies elsewhere. Traveling the ocean floor in the company of aggressive catfish or deadly Pacific crabs, and in addition in a suit that effectively limits visibility and makes every movement sluggish, is simply extremely uncomfortable. This is by far the strongest point of this game, although it could have been made even better - the struggle for survival would have become more exciting if the creators had not decided to place oxygen cylinders at almost every step.
Overall, however, the creators managed to fulfill their promises: without paranormal threads, sinister experiments or gargantuan monsters, they created survival, which evokes a feeling of strange fear even at moments when no bloodthirsty creature lurks on the horizon and we are not threatened with imminent suffocation. This is largely due to the well-run plot, which - despite the very simple in its assumptions - works perfectly, and the ending evokes extremely intense emotions. The horror of the situation is combined with the impassive, cold narrative presented in the form of an interview - all this arouses a paranoid fear in Narcosis about what lurks in the impenetrable depths of the ocean.
Due to its specificity, the game should work best in virtual reality. Limited visibility, slow movements - this title even asks you to use the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. And I would be lying if I hadn't admitted that playing with goggles does not provide much more impressions. The problem is that after a few dozen minutes at the bottom of the ocean, I found out on my own skin that Narcosis is poorly adapted to handle this technology. The title is really unpleasant to play with our labyrinth, which in my case quickly resulted in long nausea . Consequently, I had to split the game into three sessions, despite the fact that it took me about four hours to get to the credits.
The length of the game can also be included in the list of drawbacks of this production, although in the case of productions aimed primarily at devices using virtual reality, we have probably already got used to the fact that they can be included in one evening. Narcosis is unfortunately another position that suffers from the same pain, and in addition, it is not particularly tempting to approach it a second time. It is true that we can once again comb the ruins of underwater complexes and dark caves to find the bodies of the remaining crew members or their items , but to be honest I did not feel such a need.
The debut project Honor Code also suffers from technical problems. I am talking here primarily about poor optimization: on my computer, with no major problems dealing with new titles in Ultra HD resolution, the game did not maintain 60 frames, which bodes badly for owners of weaker equipment. This is especially strange considering the fact that Narcosis is not a work of art in terms of graphics - a large part of the screen is non-stop hidden in the dark, the character models look average, and the environment, although detailed, in theory should not cause problems with a strong PC- volume.
Ultimately, this title is a mix of exemplary and spectacularly broken elements. However, I do not regret the time spent: the atmosphere, well-written script and the feeling of claustrophobic fear definitely appealed to me . But despite this, it is difficult for me to recommend Narcosis. Mainly due to poor adaptation to virtual reality technology, but also due to technical problems and short gameplay time. The debut of Honor Code obviously has captivating moments, but unfortunately - instead of thalassophobia, only seasickness is left behind.
