Stardew Valley - Analysis
The ConcernedApe game began its development four years ago and it didn't take long to get the attention of the Steam community in Greenlight, which immediately gave it the green light. His blatantly retro aesthetics and family play style made many people interested in the game since its inception. His obvious resemblance to the Natsume classic opened the door to an audience that already knows the product and knows what he wants to play. If Stardew Valley manages to give that audience what it seeks, it will be here to stay.
One of the first aspects that attracts attention regarding other similar titles is the amount of elements we have to customize our avatar. Although it does not consist of many options, just letting us change the sex, hairstyle, clothes, skin tone and some accessories - where facial hair and glasses are included, for example - it does have a lot to choose from in each one of those sections, being able to count up to more than 100 different clothes or more than 30 hairstyles, for example. Something that may seem very secondary, and that does not directly affect the gameplay, but it makes clear to the first of change the intention of its developers to satisfy as much of the public as possible by covering the shortcomings of Harvest Moon and listening to the community of players, who long ago requested something like that.
In the visual section, the game boasts an artistic direction that has taken great care of the detail . A false isometric view combined with pixel-art graphics affect the feeling of being in a game that could have reached our homes a couple of decades ago, but which is part of its charm. The difference in color as the seasons pass and the specific decoration of the town for each time of the year contribute to making us want to see every corner of the valley.
One of the most negative aspects of the game is that it is not available in Spanish , which already involves a handicap for the smallest players in the house, a potential audience that is out of the fun at the first exchange. This means that for those who do not speak Shakespeare's language fluently, the game becomes somewhat arid, and some of the details and jokes it gives us are most likely lost. Even those who passed English without problem will be forced to consult the dictionary more than once to fully understand any of the missions entrusted.
When you play all your cards to be a kind of clone of a game that already has a historical path, two things can happen. That you end up beating the original and are acclaimed by all or that you stay in another mediocre attempt lacking originality. In this case, although without reaching major words, Stardew Valley is much closer to the first assumption than to the second, but still suffers from a certain lack of personality. We always have the feeling of having already seen what the game offers us.
Like his older brother, we are facing a resource management game limited by the seasons , so we can only plant certain crops at certain times of the game, which adds strategic component forcing us to decide whether to sell everything to make quick money or save part for when winter comes. The same goes for fishing, as species like squid are only found in summer.
Agriculture, livestock, fishing and mining serve as a backdrop to grow our small farm in principle. Our most urgent task is to buy seeds, prepare the land and grow our crops to sell them and buy more seeds. And start over. This base already explored before is on which the foundations of this game are laid and is the excuse to see how our coin counter rises nonstop. But if only that were the case, Stardew Valley could have been solved as a mobile game, so to have us sitting for hours in the chair in front of the PC it takes much more.
The RPG component
This additional point is given to us by the creation of tools and utensils available from the beginning. What in slang has ended up calling "crafting." Although with the limitation imposed by the level of our character, we will use many of the resources obtained in our day to day to invest them in new tools with which to process some of those materials and thus obtain elaborated products that we can sell for a good money. Let's go with another example.

Kallie PlaggeStardew Valley - Critique
Translated from English by IGN France.
I love Stardew Valley because there are lots of things to do and see, but mostly because they are (almost) all linked. It is not obvious at first - when I started my farm, I scrupulously counted each box for maximum efficiency and did not hesitate to start again when I accidentally bought the wrong seed. But the real secret of Valley is that there are a lot of things to do besides making your farm more productive every day. It was when I left my 16-bit terrain to start exploring the map that I really learned to appreciate these days - but its different parts come together to create a captivating rural vibe.
Each day in Stardew Valley lasts between 10 and 20 minutes, and most are occupied with the slow creation of your farm from scratch. Having to plant the right seeds, water your crops and wait for the harvest before you finally see the color of money also means that there are quite a few other things to do at the start. It is rather well seen, knowing that my character has just left his job at the Joja Corporation - Stardew Valley reminds us that capitalism develops without state of mind - for a simpler life on the farm of his grandfather. Stardew Valley is never simplistic. Ok, it invites you to relax and lets you grow at your own pace, but its world becomes really rich as soon as you exceed the first season.
Modest beginnings
My life in the town of Pelican (in the Stardew Valley) really started during my first summer - I could now fish, explore the mines and spend my money buying cattle. It was from this moment that the serious things really started and the game became much more demanding. I developed my cultures to get the best food that I could then offer to the locals to gain their sympathy, use to heal me after facing monsters in the mine while looking for resources, or use it to develop my closed. The ore found allowed me to improve my tools, I was also able to cut wood and access secret areas of the valley, and all that allowed me to advance my character and improve his craft. This mixture of RPG / Agricultural Simulation makes the title pleasant to navigate and makes Stardew Valley a convincing and exciting adventure without ever being painful.
All these RPG-oriented side quests are very important, since they break the routine that is quickly installed in the vast majority of agricultural simulations. After more than 30 hours spent on the game (about a year on the scale of the game), I still feel like I have lots of objects to unlock and secrets to unlock. The game also pushes you to take different paths, because many objects recovered by fishing, harvesting and mining can be combined to get great rewards and unlock new areas of the Valley. All of this connects the most distinct tasks.
Taken individually, these tasks would quickly become boring, but since you often have to change activities, this is rarely the case. The hack-and-slash type of combat system is like pure grind and is not really stimulating, but the fun side of the game comes from the fact that we do not know in advance what we wait and what object we are going to pick up. I spent a lot of time (and rainy days) harvesting underground resources and fighting monsters and skeletons, and it was always a pleasure to come across a rare or particularly useful mineral. Finally, the almost solemn title music often helped me focus on the beauty of the underworld by reducing my frustration with the fighting.
Complex characters, easy friendships
When I was not busy hunting for objects or wondering which crops would be the most productive depending on the season, I tried to build relationships with the characters populating the city and its surroundings. It was not really easy or encouraging at first - even the friendliest citizens find it difficult to confide in a stranger, which remains fairly realistic. I was still a little disappointed when they ended up giving me their confidence since the process to get it remains very basic - to "make friends" you usually just have to talk with them every day, give them gifts and give them little favors, things that I have done many times with varying degrees of success, eventually reaching a certain level of popularity.
All this is rather frustrating, because the mechanisms allowing you to develop your relationships are simplistic and never at the level of the depth of the inhabitants and their interconnected lives. For example, a quest instructed me to find the Mayor's pants, which happened to be in a rather scandalous place, while at the same time we can meet a child who spends a lot of time in his room because he thinks his mother and her stepfather prefer his half-sister, or a daughter who has a strained relationship with her mother because of her "alternative" lifestyle.
Festivals and more particularly cinematics have a very artificial aspect. After I filled in the emotional counter of a resident - a counter which indicates above all that I offered her enough gifts, I suppose - she told me that she had always dreamed of being an artist and how much her ex not support her in this process. There is also this homeless man, Linus, despised by most of the locals. I watched a grumpy old man yell at him while he was rummaging through the garbage cans for food when another man came over to offer him food. By becoming Linus' friend (by offering him food that I had cooked), I learned a lot more about this man's struggles and achievements. Even if "becoming" his friend was a simple action, "being" his friend was an experience that now made sense.
This experience could have been even more powerful if it was possible to use their secrets to develop relationships. Marriage is one of the options available, and your partner will become jealous if you have the bad idea of giving gifts to your previous suitors. Unfortunately, this aspect also remains incomplete. However, knowing how the social aspect of Stardew Valley works remains as interesting, as a piece of fiction that fits perfectly into the more developed parts of this rural world.

Elena SchulzStardew Valley in the test - there is a farmer in everyone
Nobody expected Stardew Valley's groundbreaking success. In the test we show why a farm simulation of all things steals the show from the Triple-A giants on...
The game goal of Stardew Valley on paper sounds rather unspectacular at first: We should bring an old farm up to scratch and familiarize ourselves with the village and its inhabitants. Tedious agricultural work? How can such a concept tear off so many players? What makes Stardew Valley so unique?
This is exactly what we test in the test : we dug up fields, explored mines, interviewed the long-established residents and actually came across the magic that makes even the most convinced city dweller suddenly dream of living in the country.
Before we can do this magic, however, we first have to familiarize ourselves with the game. In Stardew Valley we move through the game world in a top view and operate our tools with the mouse or act with hotspots similar to a Terraria. The comparison also lends itself technically: The game uses a very similar, colorful pixel look. This is certainly not for everyone, but the implementation in Stardew Valley has been very charming. Together with the atmospheric soundtrack, the retro look creates an almost picturesque atmosphere.
Work before pleasure
But that does not mean that there is only peace, joy, pancakes in the country idyll. Our story begins on the deathbed of our sick grandfather, who leaves us his life's work with all his might: his own farm. At this point, we didn't care - we are looking for happiness in the city as a young career person. It was only years later that we remembered the legacy - when we struggled to find work in the sparse open-plan offices of greedy corporations. We are thinking about moving for the first time, full of frustration. Thought, done, it goes to the country.
A rough two-year campaign, which occupies us around 60 hours, serves as the main thread in farm life . It leads us with charming animated sequences to the small town of Pelican Town with its residents, but does not really tell a captivating plot. Some hotspots like the haunted parish hall set quite interesting accents in terms of story, but you shouldn't expect a profound and exciting story. Stardew Valley is designed for the sandbox: in the endless game we can continue the peasant life as long as we want.
However, after the intro we are still busy with the first steps: In the inventory we find various tools such as an ax or a pickaxe with which we clear the field from wood, grasses and stones. Then we plow the soft earth and seal our entry into farm life with the first seeds.
Money makes the world go round
Every day we have to make tricky decisions: there is a huge selection of plants, one weighs them up: Rely on cheap varieties or buy the expensive ones and get fat yields regularly. We quickly want more and more money, but wealth does not grow on trees in Stardew Valley.
In the beginning, increasing one's own capital becomes a frustrating test of patience because the game never takes us by the hand. There is no tutorial, we are looking for tips for control in vain. Fortunately, some aspects, such as crafting, work relatively intuitively. We use a menu to improve our farm free of charge by building useful items such as a scarecrow to protect against hungry crows. We can also expand our own figure: If you work diligently, you can use the experience gained to improve skills such as farming.
As farmers, we then receive more money for our harvest, as animal owners more for animal products. However, you only notice the higher skill level in the income. Purely playfully, the farming work remains very uniform throughout the game - which is also due to the fact that individual operations such as planting seeds are not particularly demanding.
A game in the game
Nevertheless, the farm game is never boring, because the individual mechanics work together really well: there is always something to improve, to do a thousand things every day. This motivates even in the endless game far beyond the 60 hours of the campaign. There is also a dungeon away from the peasant life where you can hunt monsters - here Stardew Valley becomes an RPG . With a whopping 120 levels, this labyrinth is actually quite extensive. Unique monsters, precious items and minerals are waiting at every corner, which we in turn use to expand the farm.
When suddenly nothing grows anymore
Stardew Valley also provides variety over the seasons: each season has its own crops that you have to collect and plant. Winter logically does without agriculture. When it snows outside, new sources of money are needed, for example the prey from the dungeon or animal husbandry. We can make ends meet with wool, eggs or milk. So there is a lot to do in every season.
With so much drudgery, we should always keep an eye on our endurance indicator. Without sufficient food and sleep, it quickly drops to zero, causing us to lose part of our money or even level progress in the mines. It's high time to find even more sources of money in the valley. There is also the mini fishing game, which we immediately try out with the gift fishing rod and fail promptly - the big catch is only possible with a lot of patience and practice.
Farmer is looking for a woman
Alternatively, you can leave the fishery on your side and keep yourself afloat with classic quests instead. In addition to money, they also bring us sympathy and open up new opportunities for discussion with the initially very skeptical city dwellers. Despite the reduced look, the figures are believable and interesting. And that has an impact: We are genuinely shocked when we catch outsider Linus stealing food. Or we are annoyed by the grumpy Shane, whom we feel we cannot convince at all.
We can also make ourselves more popular with the villagers through gifts and even win their hearts. There are five female and male marriage candidates, who can move in with us later and help on the farm or give us offspring. If we marry a same-sex partner, we can adopt a baby. At the moment, however, children do not get past the toddler stage. But of course family life is not a must.
So what is it now, the magic feature of Stardew Valley? Is it the many hidden content like the dungeon role-playing game? The farm? Or do we rather enchant the credible villagers, who all follow their personal daily routine? After many hours on the virtual farm, we can say that none of this alone makes Stardew Valley a hit that enchants hundreds of thousands of players. It is only in the interaction of all mechanics that magic arises that we cannot let go of.
It's all in the mix
Stardew Valley, like well-known indie greats like Terraria or Minecraft, gives us the feeling at every point that we are making this exciting world our own. We go to sleep in the evening with the good feeling that we have done something tangible. And more importantly, when we get up the next morning, there are a thousand things we can do. The sheer volume of tasks makes this life simulation an absolutely captivating experience.
In the end we are really proud of our farm, our fish, our cows and our fields. And that's exactly where the charm of Stardew Valley is hidden. We actually build a life for ourselves with the money we have generated in the valley and have our own identity. Do we prefer to buy from the village shop or do we support the large Joja market? Do we fall in love or are we loners? In Stardew Valley, every player can tell their own story. And we quickly learn that country life means above all work, but it also has another wonderful taste: freedom.
